July 19, 2023 (IANSlife) St. Moritz is undoubtedly Switzerland’s swankiest ski resort. The village located in the Upper Engadin, is the place to see and be seen! From thermal baths to high-end shopping centres, Belle Époque stays, St. Moritz offers guests with an all-around indulgent holiday experience. Over time, the ‘birthplace of winter tourism’ has managed to build its image as a culinary paradise as well. According to the Michelin Guide, Switzerland is among the countries with the highest density of Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe, and many are in St. Moritz! But three stars or none, St. Moritz is home to many restaurants for all the discerning gourmands! Here are some that should not be missed-
Krone
With charming interiors, set in a historic mountain resort, Krone is currently headed by Chef Samuel Carugati. The restaurant serves authentic Italian cuisine with a modern twist and hints of classic French techniques to create depth of flavours along with subtle aromas. At Krone, guests are served classic Italian dishes, with sophisticated presentations focusing on top-quality produce with freshly baked bread and an outstanding wine list to pair your meal with. The mountains, lakes and surreal landscapes of St. Moritz are what inspire the chef to create his dishes allowing him to express himself in the best way possible.
Chesa Veglia, Badrutt’s Palace Hotel
Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St. Moritz has a legendary reputation and has been a popular choice for celebrities and other VIPs who wish to indulge in exquisite luxury. When Chesa Veglia, a farmhouse built in 1658 became a part of the hotel back in 1936- the place transformed into a meeting place for gourmets and VIPs. Since then, the rustic atmosphere has attracted both locals and tourists alike and still enjoys great popularity today. Here one can experience fine French cuisine like foie gras and classic grilled meat and fish from the building's original stone oven, apart from the grill restaurant(- Grill Chadafo), the place also houses an Italian pizzeria- (Pizzeria Heuboden) and a third restaurant called- Patrizier Stuben which offers traditional Swiss cuisine, including locally sourced vegetables, fish, meats and an international wine list.
The three restaurants and two bars at Chesa Veglia -all of which are unique in its kind, cater to a variety of taste preferences and highlight St. Moritz dining at its very best!
The K by Mauro Colagreco, The Kulm Hotel
The ‘K’ restaurant sits at 6,000 feet above sea level inside one of Switzerland’s most famous five-star hotels, The Kulm in St. Moritz. Open only in the winter seasons, it is headed by a three-star Michelin chef Mauro Colagreco, this gorgeous and sustainability-driven restaurant has unique ways to breathe in new life to traditional dishes. For example, Chef Mauro’s Nicoise salad uses mackerel instead of tuna -- the reason being tuna populations are declining and have more metals/toxins than mackerel. To give you a taste of meat in his pasta dish he uses smoky tea and many of his clients think it has meat or fish in it. The menu is largely based on classical French cooking with a hint of the Mediterranean and the diners at the “K’ are always greeted with a sumptuous vegan tasting menu. Best to try their surprise menu instead of ordering a la carte!
Ecco St. Moritz, Giardino Mountain Hotel
In the winter, the team of Ecco migrates to the Giardino Mountain Hotel from Lake Maggiore, Ascona. The two Michelin-starred Ecco St. Moritz, under the guidance of passionate Chef Rolf Fliegauf, serves the guests dishes which star local seasonal produce in a serene space, formerly a chapel. The white and gold room has artistic graffiti on the walls that complement the recipes which artfully combine the ingredients in a way that does not take away from the produce’s natural taste, making the whole dining experience uniquely unexpected.
Dal Mulin
For local Alpine cuisine, Dal Mulin offers a stylish rustic space with modern elements. The dishes served here are simple and authentic just like the restaurant’s setting with a focus on preparation over presentation.
